Six PhD Opportunities under Sida Research Project:
GIT for Disaster and Natural Resource Management Sub-program at EMU 2017-2021
The Sida Research Project, GIT for disaster and natural resource management sub-program is a five-year research project funded by the Swedish International Development Agency (Sida) and the Swedish Embassy in Mozambique. The GIT sub-program is implemented by the Department of Mathematics and Informatics (DMI), at Eduardo Mondlane University, on the Mozambique side, Lund University and KTH (Royal Institute of Technology), in Sweden and North West University in South Africa. The primary objective of the program is: “to build capacity within Mozambique, in order to make it possible for the country to adapt and mitigate potential impacts of climate change, and thus promote sustainable environmental development.” In order to achieve this, one main objectives is to:
Train university staff from several academic subjects and departments to PhD level in GIT/disaster management, increasing quality in research as well as education.
For this, PhD training during 4 years (full-time) will be carried out in a “sandwich” mode were the students stay partly in the host country (Sweden or South Africa), and partly at the department at UEM. Six scholarships are offered to qualified MSc holders of UEM staff who would like to pursue research in the field of geo-information technologies for disaster and natural resource management. The projects in this call are:
Developing environmental management technologies for improved livelihoods, focusing on flooding and water resources including adaptation strategies (responsible partner = LU, Sweden)
Mathematical modelling and optimization with informatics for GIT-based decision support systems in disaster management (responsible partner = LU, Sweden)
Mapping vulnerability and dependencies in socio-ecological systems with GIT
(responsible partner = LU, Sweden)
Earth observation technology for natural resource management and environmental change monitoring (responsible partner = KTH, Sweden)
Developments of models, methods, and platforms for GIT based collaborative real-time disaster response (responsible partner = KTH, Sweden)
Transboundary policies supporting eco-disaster risk reduction: A multi-sphere analysis of implementation and enhancement (responsible partner = NWU, South Africa)
